WHAT ARE
RX STIMULANTS?




  • Pharmaceutical Amphetamine (Ritalin/Adderall) is a strong physical and mental stimulant available in prescription form.

  • Amphetamines have been used by the military, pilots, truck drivers, and students in order to function past their normal limits.

  • Amphetamines, in reasonable amounts, have been prescribed to treat ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) and effects are both calming and quieting to such users.  Common ADD medications include Dexedrine, Adderall, Vyvanse, and Ritalin.

WHAT ARE
RX STIMULANTS ? 





  • Amphetamines were first synthesized in 1887 and made available to treat narcolepsy and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) in the late 1930’s. 

  • During WWII amphetamines were widely used by both the Allied and Axis armies.

  • Amphetamines have also been called speed or dex.

  • Amphetamines are similar, in chemical structure, to dopamine and norepinephrine.

  • Amphetamines can be swallowed, insufflated (snorted), smoked, and injected.

WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS
OF RX STIMULANTS?



  • Amphetamines are stimulants that affect the CNS (central nervous system).

  • Amphetamines produce alertness, increase in levels of energy, and stamina.

  • Increased doses can result in negative effects such as malnutrition and vitamin deficiencies, skin disorders, ulcers, lack of sleep, weight loss, depression, false sense of self-confidence, and possible brain damage.

WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF RX STIMULANTS?




  • Large doses, over a period of time, can result in amphetamine psychosis, which is equivalent and similar to paranoid schizophrenia disorder.

  • Time released tablets have a duration of up to 8 hours.

WHAT IS THE DOSAGE OF RX STIMULANTS?

  • Amphetamines are a Schedule II drug, which means that it is illegal to sell, purchase, or possess with a prescription.   

  • Recently GCMS laboratories received samples of ‘counterfeit’ pharmaceutical amphetamines, which are pressed to look like prescription drugs, but are actually a combination of various drugs, including pharmaceutical drugs and ‘street’ produced methamphetamine.
