WHAT ARE CATHINONES?

  • Cathinones are a family of drugs that belong to the psychedelic phenethylamine family.

  • These drugs are often sold online under various ‘trade names’, including Explosion and Ease, or they are misrepresented as MDMA under the name ‘molly’.

  • Negative effects include nausea, vomiting, gastrointestinal discomfort, paranoia, fear, over-awareness and over-sensitization to music and noise, and muscle tension.

  • Unfortunately, reagent testing can identify a sample as a cathinone, but cannot differentiate them from each other.

WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS
OF CATHINONES?

  • The effects of many of the cathinones roughly mimic MDMA, which is why they are often misrepresented as ‘molly’.

  • Cathinone users report an introspection of feelings and emotions.  In addition, many people report an increase in sexual libido and willingness to explore partners “intimate side of things.”

  • Negative effects include feelings of confusion and a feeling of having a ‘divided mind’.

WHAT IS THE DOSAGE OF CATHINONES?

EVERY INDIVIDUAL REACTS DIFFERENTLY TO EVERY CHEMICAL, this information is intended
to describe the range of dosages others report using and it should not be construed as a recommendation of any sort. Individuals can respond very differently to the same dosage.

WHAT IS SAFE FOR ONE CAN BE DEADLY
FOR ANOTHER.

WHAT IS THE DOSAGE OF CATHINONES?

  • Oral dose ranges from 60 mg - 250 mg and common amounts used fall within 100 mg to 250 mg.

  • Insufflated dose ranges from 30 mg - 100 mg.

  • “Boosting/Bumping” typically follows initial doses to maintain a longer high by either orally 30 mg - 100 mg and insufflated 30 mg - 100 mg.

  • Some users report a “worrying” increase in their blood pressure and heart rate when taking doses over 180 mg - 200 mg.

HARM REDUCTION
TIPS FOR CATHINONES

THIS IS AN EXTREMELY NEW SUBSTANCE, WITH A LIMITED HISTORY OF HUMAN USE. THE FULL RANGE OR RISKS FOR THIS SUBSTANCE IS CURRENTLY UNKNOWN.

As with all psychedelics, ‘set’ and ‘setting’ are extremely important. "Set" is the mental state a person brings to the experience - their thoughts, mood and expectations. "Setting" is the physical and social environment in which the drug is being consumed. By making sure that a person is in a good mental state and supportive location before PMA/PMMA is used, the risk of ‘bad trips’ can be greatly mitigated.

HARM REDUCTION
TIPS FOR CATHINONES

  • Cathinones are illegal and most are listed as a schedule I drug.  Possession may result in long prison terms.

  • Negative side effects can increase with higher does.

  • Difficulty with focusing and concept of time have been reported.

  • One study reported possible accidental death associated with cathinone use.

  • Difficulty with sleep when coming down from the cathinone experience is common.

HARM REDUCTION
TIPS FOR CATHINONES

  • Starting with a small amount before deciding to take more can prevent having an overwhelming experience, and minimize the chance of overdosing.

  • Reports of muscle tension in the head and neck reported as ‘extremely discomforting’ are common.

  • Carefully consider before choosing to use this substance due to mislabeling, misidentification, issues of purity, adulteration, and misrepresentation (substitution), which are a common problem with research chemicals.
