WHAT IS MORPHINE?




  • Morphine is classified as a opioid narcotic analgesic. 

  • It was first used in 1806 in series of experiments that resulted in findings that indicated morphine was up to 10 times more potent than opium. 

  • Morphine inherited its name after “Morpheus, the god of dreams.” 

  • Morphine is used to treat extreme amounts of pain and is extracted from the opium poppy.

  • Morphine is found in a refined form as white powders, sold both legally and illegally.

  • Morphine can be administered orally or IV (intravenously).

  • Morphine administered intravenously is known to be more powerful and, and therefore, dangerous than when taken orally. 

  • Morphine effects can include mental clouding, suppression of the cough center, stimulation of the vomiting center, and relaxation.

  • Pure morphine in certain amounts is classified as a Schedule II drug, which makes it illegal to sell and illegal to purchase or possess without a prescription or license. Legal amounts vary by state.

  • As with any opiate someone experiencing adverse side effects may find them alleviated by lying down.  Nausea, vomiting and other effects may increase as dose increases.
