Gather round, children... Hunter Petree and Delilah Friedler, Narrators and DJs in HANSeL/GReTeL, present a quarterly sharty (show/party) that intertwines storytelling, performance, and dance music to remix our collective relationship with fairy tales.
For our Cookie Mix Series, they debut a live set for the very first time. This mix captures the final hour of their enchanting retelling of "Hansel and Gretel" from a woodland gathering in Tennessee; you'll hear the spirited crowd reactions from the very first moments. Everyone knows that Hansel and Gretel discovered a house in the woods and defeated the witch who lived there, but what did it sound like? How did it feel? And what happened next?
With musical selections ranging from dubby techno and warm breaks to vogue beats and experimental bass, HANSeL/GReTeL has graced the stages of Parkside Lounge, Metropolitan, The Grassy Noll, and the Vale of Cashmere. Their next sharty—a dancefloor reimagining of "Cinderella"—will be held on Friday, September 6, at Rubulad in Brooklyn.
“Hansel and Gretel” and "Cinderella" are not mere fairy tales; they are manifestations of ancestral lineages starved by cultural and literal famines, whitewashed by the tides of history, and still resonating within us in 2024. By gathering on the dancefloor’s sacred space, we can confront, question, and ultimately rewrite a “happily ever after” that never truly was.
